Daredevil Born Again: does it live up to the original?

Daredevil’s reboot show Daredevil Born Again just had its finale drop. But, did it live up to the original? The short answer is… kinda.

Overall the show was good. The last two episodes especially. But not quite as good as the original in my opinion. Apparently episodes 2-7 we’re done by a different creative team than episodes 1,8, and 9. And it shows. Episodes 2-7 feel like a somewhat cheaper imitation of daredevil, a definite MCUification of the show. Yet, still good television I might add. But episodes 1,8, and 9 feel so close to the original. Characters, plots, and tone, it’s all there. And the next season is also done by this team, so am very excited for that. I think we have reason to be very hopeful for season 2. Overall there were a few plot choices I didn’t like very much, but the plot was still engaging and sound. I also didn’t love some of the music choices in episodes 8 and 9, but everything else in those episodes was supberb. I also noticed a lack of religious themes that were present in the original, which is okay, but I also feel like it was an important part of his character that definitely leaves a hole. Overall I would definitely recommend watching the show to anyone who watched the original, or even to anyone who hasn’t. (But also go watch the old one it’s really really good.)

Daredevil Born Again comes close, but doesn’t quite reach the heights of the original, but overall it gives fans what they want and proves that the devils work is never done.

Viewership

The first episodes of the show drew in 7.5 million viewers in the first week, which may not seem great when compared to other shows like Agatha’s over 10M. But it is important to note three things. One, Disney+ has recently had a large subscription drop due to price hikes. Two, Daredevil Born Again is TV-MA and therefore has a smaller and somewhat different target audience than most other Disney+ shows. And three, Disney released this number right away, meaning they saw it as good news and something to let people in on. So overall, I it seems like it did pretty well. I will be curious to see how season 2 does, since it is already greenlit and filmed, and I hope we get a season 3 and maybe even beyond.
