Ironheart: an Honest Review

Ironheart has seemed to stir up some controversy online, furthering the gap between disgruntled fans who feel that the MCU is straying far from its original quality and feel, and into something more mediocre and politically charged; and fans who just want to enjoy the ride, and love to see new and interesting characters get shows on a regular basis, fans that loved Agatha and Wandavison (not saying either were bad, actually wandavison was one of the best marvel shows) come to mind. So, with so much controversy, it’s hard to come to an honest assessment of the show, but that’s what I’m going to try to do here. Block out all the noise and really ask, is Ironheart a good show?

Spoiler Free Review

My first answer to is Ironheart a good show is, it’s complicated. I’m torn because it has many great moments, but also some not so great moments. It’s feels a little off kilter plot wise, like a lot is missing. And the ending… well let’s just say I don’t even want to think about the ending right now because I don’t know if it was genius and epic, or stupid and disappointing.

While Ironheart certainly has some redeeming qualities, it’s noticeably a part of the old marvel plan and not Marvel’s new vision that seems to have kicked off with Thunderbolts. There is also unfortunately some credence to the claims of the show having politicaly charged moments. One such moment that really upset some people was when Riri said that Tony Stark wouldn’t be Tony Stark if he wasn’t a billionaire. At first I didn’t have any issue with this line, as it seemed true to me. But then I remembered that he literally build his suit “in a cave, with a box of scraps” and then in iron man three proceeded to make a bunch of cool tech with stuff from a hardware store. So, while being a billionaire doesn’t hurt, it is not what makes Tony Ironman, he didn’t need his inherited billions to build his suit, he’s smart enough to make the money himself, and to build it with minimal resources, and he definitely didn’t need his billions to sacrifice his life for the entire universe. So, it’s like the writers don’t even know anything about the most popular character in their universe! They just want to “check his privilege” since he is an old white guy. But, I digress, while there were a few moments like this, overall it didn’t take away from my enjoyment too much.

Overall I did enjoy this show. It kept me watching, which is more than I can say for some other Marvel shows. I was hooked and needed to know what was going to happen, and some of the characters were intriguing and fun to watch, while others were annoying and hard to watch… So, I guess my theme here is I liked some of it, and definitely didn’t like some of it. Technically, it was good, good CGI, good cinematography, great acting, everything was good, but nothing mind blowing or really different.

Overall, Ironheart hits the mark in some ways and falls short in others, ultimately it’s worth the watch for marvel fans, but one I’m sure casuals will skip and one that we will move on from quickly.

Viewership

Ironheart was #1 on Disney plus last week, however sources are reporting that it’s not looking great viewship wise, and a season two very unlikely. I have a feeling this show either gets left behind like secret invasion, or picked up in a champions or young avengers special to appease fans who have been watching all these shows with loose ends. I think it would be a good way to tie them all up and move on.
