The Minecraft Movie: Better than it Should’ve Been.

The long awaited Minecraft movie has finally come out, although, it’s not exactly what most fans would’ve imagined. When the idea was first introduced many many years ago, fans expected a more serious, and more… animated movie, probably about killing the ender dragon. Instead, we got an absolutely ridiculous movie with Jack Black and Jason Mamoa in live action. Yet, it was better than I expected!

Spoiler free review

Jack Black and Jason Mamoa bring such energy to the movie and are just halarious. As a huge Minecraft fan I also love all the little nods and details, and while they definitely took some creative liberties, enough was game accurate for me to be happy. Overall the movie was a blast, my whole theater was laughing the whole time and quoting all the ridiculous quotes that have gone viral online. I could hear “Chicken Jockey!” Echo throughout my theater when the moment came. Was it a cinematic masterpiece? Or a great character peice? Absolutely not, but that’s because it’s not supposed to be. It’s not taking itself seriously, it’s very self aware and it’s just trying to be a good time. Which it certainly was. Now, would I still have preferred an animated movie with a slightly more serious storyline? Maybe, but I’m still very happy with what we got.

A Minecraft movie is better than it should’ve been, it’s a ridiculous and fun ride, and one that I was happy to be along for.

Box Office Outlook

As of Thursday night sources are reporting an estimated 100-140M worldwide opening. This is great, especially when compared to an estimated budget of 150M. And when compared to the absolute success of the Mario bros movie which made about 145M opening weekend. Despise the bad critic feedback, the movie is a success at the box office. With this kind of success I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Minecraft Movie 2 in the near future.
